Chapter 9

I found myself far more nervous the following day. Oh, certainly, Emily was what mattered the most to me, and I never had any doubts about it, but I trusted in her enough that she wouldn’t put herself at risk without some kind of plan, or without some sort of certainty.

Rescuing our people away from those that meant them harm was different. For one, fighting was almost inevitable. Yes, Adamar would supposedly try to make it as easy as he could for us, but even then, there would be fighting.

Our people. How easy was it for me to think about them in those terms, now? Amaranth had once said she was not my queen, I had sworn no oaths to her, I wasn’t one of her subjects, and yet, I felt like one of her people. My relationship with Emily helped with that, obviously, and even the fact I enjoyed the blonde’s presence, but was it enough to consider her people as my people? It seemed it was.

The three of us waited in place for Adamar to say something, give a hint that the time to move was upon us. Oh, I was pretty sure Mei would soon get pissed enough that she might just break down the door to Arali’s room like she had with the one that led to Adamar’s. I was certain she could do it, seeing the ease with which she broke down his door the previous day, but the bunnygirl understood it might be better for us to wait for a bit longer, wait for the right time to act.

Hopefully, the group we left behind had hidden from any patrols moving in their direction, but there was always a chance of Taeralin stumbling upon them.

All in all, it was quite a tense situation, and I only truly felt better about it when Adamar opened the door and gestured for us to get out. He was holding a cane, supporting himself on it, but he looked far better than I expected for a guy that got his leg broken like he had the previous night.

He seemed to glare for a few moments at Mei, though the bunnygirl only smiled in response, and he scoffed. “Taeralin and her lackeys left the town about two hours ago, once they were convinced you weren’t hiding nearby. I sent most of my guard with her. It should be easy for you to get your people out.”

We moved after him, and it seemed clear the cane he was using was more for show than anything. Oh, he supported himself on it, but he moved fast enough that his wound didn’t seem to hinder him much.

“Take these stairs, follow them down to the basement. You’ll find your people there.” He turned to us, focused on Mei. “And for the moon’s sake, don’t kill anyone of mine. Maybe don’t kill anyone at all, not here. It will make your attack last night less suspicious if you don’t kill anyone while breaking your people out.
